6th - 13th September 2009
Group size: 4-8
One of Natures most exciting phenomena; a rare chance to witness this gathering of thousands and thousands of birds as they ready to cross the Strait of Gibraltar on their way to wintering quarters in the subcontinent.
Witness the astounding diversity of birdlife on its passage through southern Spain to warmer climes. If birdlife intrigues you then look no further. Our expert guides bring the avian world alive with their passionate insights into the ornithological. This tour is designed for both the beginner as well as the expert.
THE AREA
Autumn is the season of choice as most birds are on the move southwards to winter in warmer climes. Winging their way down through Western Europe towards warmer climes, the strip of sea that is the Strait of Gibraltar proves a substatial hurdle.
Birds gather in huge numbers, tending to stick to their species, awaiting favourable weather conditions before attempting the hazardous eight mile crossing to Africa.
We are indeed fortunate to be teeming up once more with local guide Peter Jones of Spanish Nature. A leading light and co-founder of the Andalucian Bird Society, Peter has been based in the Serrania de Ronda for several years. He'll be showing you the mountains on his own doorstep as well as the neighbouring Sierra de Grazalema, before concentrating on the Strait coastal area around Tarifa and the renowned wetlands of Doņana.
Your guide's in depth knowledge helps to choose the best sites for witnessing this amazing migration spectacle. You can expect to see large flocks of Honey Buzzards, White Storks, Black Kites, with the odd Osprey, or Egyptian Vulture thrown into the swirling mass of wings.
Our expert resident guide will show both beginners and experienced birders in this small group all the hot spots vital for finding some of the rarest species. Mountains, plains, wetlands, and coastal stretches will all be visited. We will also take in the world renowned eco syetems of Coto Doņana with a good chance of spotting the endangered Spanish Imperial Eagle.
