Famous the world over this is one of the oldest pilgrimage routes in Europe.
Crossing the Pyrenees from France (hence it's proper title, Camino Francés) the Camino crosses the whole of Northern Spain before its arrival in the World Heritage City of Santiago de Compostela.
We organise hotel bookings, luggage transfers and supply comprehensive route maps and directions, enabling you to enjoy your holiday to the full. Following the Camino as an Independent or Self Guided walk is one of the most satisfying ways of experiencing this ancient path, with an ever changing rural backdrop.
We specialise in providing a full service for those wanting to walk the last stretch of the Camino as it enters Galicia in north west Spain. it is fairly common for walkers to take a week and aim for the last 100kms to Santiago as this entitles them to a certificate recognising their effforts. If that is the case then you'll want to start from the town of Sarria.
However, if you do have a couple of weeks then we would recommend starting further back from the town of Ponferrada on the border of Leon and Galicia. The countryside of El Bierzo is full of pretty hamlets, apple and pear orchards and home to some of the best red wine producers in the area. The climb into Galicia then takes half a day on fairly steep inclines but is well worth the effort as the path through ancient chestnut groves is well shaded. The views that open up over the Ancares range are some of the most spectacular that the Camino has to offer. A couple of days later you'll also have the added bonus of visiting the Benedictine Monastery at Samos, rebuilt durng Franco's time after a fire in the Benedictine distillery reduced it to rubble!
The two week route is ideally split in half with a rest day enabling you to stay in nearby Leon, a citadel city still surrounded by roman walls.
