A pool, a book, and a bike. Add to that a surrounding countryside made up of apple orchards, hilltop castles, ancient remains, and unspoilt beaches. What more could you ask for? How about a 4 star hotel with a team of chefs and a friendly staff to serve you some of the best food and drink the Empordá has to offer!
THE AREA
Since the earliest days of mediterranean maritime trade the Empordá area was the one of the first to attract Greek and Phoenician enclaves. Wide sandy bays, enclosed by rocky headlands, enabled easy access to an extensive inland fertile plain.
A quick glance at the landscape around Toroella de Montgri shows how little has changed since over 2500 years. The rolling fields are still largely cultivated with a wide variety of arable crops, olive groves, vineyards, as well as many types of fruit including, pears and apples.
THE HOTEL
"A dream made reality." These are the words of Ampar, the owner of Moli del Mig. She had been on the lookout for a suitable location for years before she chanced across the ruins of a former mill on the outskirts of Toroella. She saw the potential at once for linking her thriving cycle hire company with a luxurious rural base.
A well deserved four star rating due in no small part to the well proportioned rooms with their massive landscape picture windows. Beds big enough to lose yourself in. Some of the rooms are located in the original part of the restored mill whilst the rest sit in the ultra modern extension. There are also several stand alone modules in the garden affording magnificent 360 views of the countryside.
There are a couple of lounges, a bar and a magnificent dining room with another one of those landscape windows onto the kitchen where the chefs can be seeing plying their trade.
The cuisine is a mix of avant garde and traditional catalan cuisine and works well with good portions and mouth watering flavours.
THINGS TO DO
We like the fact that whether you are lazing by the pool or shaded by ancient cypresses and surrounded by apple orchards, you can hear partridges calling nearby.
If you fancy exploring further afield, why not jump on one of the hotel's bikes and wander down on quiet tracks to the beach. There are a wide range of cycle tracks allowing you to discover the surrounding countryside without being worried by busy roads.
If you've brought your walking shoes then try for hilltop fortress overlooking the nearby town of Toroella.
The nearby archaeological remains of Greco-Roman and Iberian cities at L’Escala and Ullastret are easily accessible, as are several well preserved fortified medieval villages.
