THE AREA
The Priorat is one of only two wine producing areas in Spain to be awarded a DOQ (Denominacion de Origen de Calidad) for its outstanding quality.  It just so happens that most of these vineyards are perched precariously on steep hillsides surrounded by limestone massifs on three sides.  This makes for a stunning landscape whether you want to stretch your legs or simply explore the country roads.

Carthusian monks tilled the land in medieval times and the impressive ruins of Scala Dei bear testament to their toils.  The abrupt terrain has added strategic importance and the village of Siurana perched high above the valleys was the last outpost of the Moorish occupation in Catalunia to fall into Christian hands.

The local olive also know as Siurana produces a highly distinguishable oil which regularly wins awards and is known throughout the world for its high quality.

Given that the wine and olive oil form this region are universally renowned, it's not surprising that the Priorat and Montsant is fast becoming a mecca for lovers of good food.  There are now several restaurants in the area that pride themselves on producing first class cuisine, often at very reasonable prices.


THE ACCOMMODATION
The Hostal Sport in Falset may not look grand from the outside, but its vast wooden doors hide a newly decorated interior with well proportioned rooms.  If you fancy indulging yourselves that little bit more then the top floor suite with its fantastic views over the rooftops of the small town is a real treat.

THINGS TO DO
Walk, work up an appetite and then eat and enjoy the local fare at our recommended restaurants.  What could be simpler?

There are a good choice of paths with various grades of difficulty, many of them starting from the front door of the hotel.

Alternatively there are wine tours and tastings at several 'bodegas', and plenty of museums, and archaeological remains to visit.
