Ubrique - Villalengua del Rosario. 2hrs 30 mins, 8 kms After a brief walk round the old town centre of this leather producing centre, we headed uphill once more on a waonderful cobbled track. This was originally a Roman paved way connecting villages as well as the southern coast with the interior. Today the whole of Spain is on alert due to gale force winds. Heavy snow is also expected on all the mountains. We were buffeted along and stopped off at the village of Benoacaz, a small white village wreathed in mist. Here we saught shelter in a bar and enjoyed some pork fillet sandwiches! ![]() After a look round the abandoned Nazari quarter we dropped back down to the GR7 and suddenly found ourselves on some original Roman paving. The diffrence between this and the morning cobbles was profound, and made us realise just how much smoother and quicker the way must have been for chariots and foot soldiers some 2500 years ago. As we swung round into the Manga de Villalengua, the countryside reminded us that we had now truly moved from the sandstone hills into the limestone mountains. A short narrow valley with high sided cliffs now hemmed us in. The gale force wind fairly propelled us up the valley still following the ancient tracks, and we were soon deposited on the outskirts of Villalengua, the smallest village on our journey. |
