BENASQUE - WALKING IN THE SPANISH PYRENEES - 28TH JUNE 2009 TO 5TH JULY 2009

This was the fourth year that I have had the opportunity of being able to participate in a well organised and enjoyable walking holiday in Spain led by Callum and assisted for the second year, especially with the driving by Luis.

Chris and his sherpa

This year's holiday saw 15 of us (9 sighted and 6 visually impaired) arrive at Barcelona Airport ready to be driven by Callum and Louis in their mini buses to the Spanish Pyrenees where we stayed at Hotel Turpi near Benasque.  I found this to be a comfortable and clean hotel with the staff being very attentive and friendly.

Once again Callum conscientiously planned and led six walks for us which were of varying distances and certainly varied in their own difficulties/challenges including lots of water crossings and scrambles up to high peaks to admire the wonderful views and look down on the patches of snow that were still evident and of course the valleys below.  It was also possible on the walks to admire the local wildlife, plants and flowers that were in season.

The weather throughout was quite warm and pleasant although there were rain showers, thunder and lightening which by some kind of coincidence mostly occurred in the afternoon after I had applied sun cream at our lunch time stop.

During our stay we also visited Benasque and those who wished also went swimming at a hotel not far from where we were all staying.

In summary another wonderful week of walking led by Callum, something that I would certainly want to do again in the future!!

Stunning mountain scenery
